Important news for iPhone 3G jailbreakers and 2008-edition MacBook owners

The fine folks from iphone-dev have just posted the following PSA to their blog - as it is highly important for iPhone 3G and MacBook owners, I repost it here in its entity:

1) GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone and want potential soft unlock in the near future do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool.
2) Read item 1 again and again.
3) At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn.
4) These are suitable for the recent 2.2 release.
5) Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
6) The ‘late 2008’ MacBook/air/pro line of computers have an issue with DFU mode. While it’s possible to go from Pwned 2.1 -> Pwned 2.2 (using PwnageTool), you can’t yet go from stock to pwned. If in any doubt use a different machine.
7) Choosing the correct tool is crucial. Be warned!

As usual, further information on a variety of interesting topics can be had at the link above!

PDANet no longer free

Readers currently using PDANet should be extremely careful when it comes to updating their jailbroken apps via Cydia - mobilityToday reports that the boys at June Fabrics have performed a really devious bait-and-switch trick.

While version 1.40 adds a variety of valuable features, it also contains a hidden timer which eventually expires and forces you to cough up 29$ in order to continue using the program.

Don’t get me wrong: developers should (and IMHO have to) stop giving away iPhone apps for free in order to make money more effectively - however, performing bait-and-switch tactics not only is bad business behavior, but also is illegal under some jurisdictions (e.g. Austria and other parts of the EU).

Once again: if you currently use PDANet, don’t upgrade!

WinPwn and firmware 2.1 - No Go

This one is for all who recently updated their firmware to version 2.1 and now look for a way to unlock it. Be warned: WinPwn 2.5 is NOT the way to go.

Looking at the official WinPwn page reveals the following:

WinPwn 3.0 Update (09/14/08)

It’s been very busy for me recently at work and I haven’t had much time to spend on WinPwn.But i’m hoping that planet/squpid and I can get the latest version out soon. I will keep you updated!

Stay tuned for further info as we get it!

Erica Sadun’s AppFlow - the review

One of the biggest innovations of the iPhone/iPod touch is the CoverFlow technology that displays the covers of albums as they are played back. Erica Sadun’s AppFlow promises to fix this problem on jailbroken iPhones - but can it stack up?

Starting up AppFlow doesn’t do much - all it displays is a boring list of applications. Tapping one of them allows you to launch the program.

Alternatively, a “tag” can be assigned:

Tilting the device into landscape mode reveals the program’s true strength - Coverflow for applications. Icons are shown scaled up, which unfortunately doesn’t look too well in some cases:

The product displays an extremely annoying splash screen at start-up. This takes up loads of time and should IMHO be removed ASAP:

In the end, Appflow does what it promises: applications can now be launched via a CoverFlow-like display. While this definitely looks cool, everybody has to decide about its practical values himself (which are further diminished by the slow start-up). As this is a free app, however, nothing speaks about installing it just for kicks…
