I actually just hoped for a funny quote from Berthold Thoma, the CEO of Hutchison Austria – what I got instead can best be described as bombshell.
He stated that his carrier will offer the iPad right from the start:
Hutchison Austria will be the first Austrian carrier to bundle the iPad. We will do so via our long-established laptop bundle, which offers customers a 333euro rebate if they agree to a 2yr contract offering 5GB of data for 29.90euro.
As the first iPads sold in Austria won’t have 3G radios, we will bundle the device with a Huawei modem called i-Mo. This device is a “wireless wifi router”, creating a personal WiFi for the iPad.

3 wird als erster heimischer Mobilfunker den neuen Apple iPad in einem ermäßigten Bundle anbieten. 3 dehnt sein erfolgreiches mit dem Fachhandel entwickelte Laptop-Bundle auf den iPad aus. So wird der iPad in Kombination mit dem 3Data Laptop-Tarif mit 333 Euro-Rabatt angeboten werden. Mit 3Data Laptop gibt es monatlich 5 GB Datenvolumen um nur 29,90 Euro monatlich. Das Bundle wird mit dem Österreichstart des iPad bei ausgesuchten Vertriebspartnern verfügbar sein.
Da die erste Version des iPad weder über ein integriertes UMTS-Modem, noch über USB-Anschlüsse verfügt, bietet es 3 gemeinsam mit dem mobilem WLAN-Modem Huawei i-Mo an. Mit dem i-Mo, das kaum größer als ein Schlüsselanhänger ist und wie ein kabelloser WLAN-Router funktioniert, können 3Kunden einfach über das 3Meganetz online gehen. I-Mo baut ein persönliches WLAN-Netz auf, das überall hin mitgenommen wird – gesurft wird über den Datenturbo HSDPA.
