Wired.com claims the following:

A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple’s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. An Apple spokesman declined to comment when reached by phone.

I personally see little reason why Apple should balk at the idea of integrated mics and cameras – developers have been experimenting with “virtual reality” games for quite some time as analysts expect them to go mainstream “sooner than later”.

Unifying the platform will likely help Apple a lot – which means that these boxen could very well be real!
