Our Russia-based readers will be more than happy to hear that the iPhone 3G is well on its way to their local carrier(s).

Yahoo quotes Reuters stating that the carrier MegaFon has signed a deal with Apple and plans to start selling the iPhone 3G soon:

“The sales of iPhone in Russia will start this year,” the company said in a statement.

News services have reported that two more carriers in Russia are interested in the device, but were scared away due to high “guaranteed sales numbers”. As of now, nobody knows if/when other carriers will follow suit…

P.S. Russia definitely has more than enough people to have two carriers. Peru is said to have three carriers carrying the 3G, in Austria, two carriers peddle the box…

Our reader zub has sent in some extra info on Peru:

Peru “only” has two carriers, Claro(an america mobiles brand) and movistar (owned by telefonica)

I bet that this two got a regional contract, I don’t think they have to meet the guarateed sales by country rather than by region ( latin America )
